Here we are at another New Year and all of us who care about animals must hope that it will usher in a better time for them. It is most unfortunate for dogs and cats here in Australia that the holiday season coincides with puppy/kitten season.

It is a lamentable fact that by Easter, if not before, the cute babies that were given as presents now will have outgrown their baby appeal and turned into gangly youngsters and if they were not wanted in the first place and have not had the care and training all young things need they will be considered problem pets and will be on the way to pounds and shelters where at a time of year when  there are so many unwanteds their chance of finding a forever loving home are minimal.

Puppies and kittens are  not inanimate cuddly toys but sensitive beings with the same basic needs of any baby.  and it is kind to neither them or the recipients to give them as presents.

The initial cost of a puppy or kitten is nothing compared with what it is going to cost in its lifetime,

Every time I see a sign outside a house or read an advert in the paper offering 'free' kittens or puppies I send up a silent prayer that some at least will find good forever homes. Not just a home till the novelty wears off, or the new owner wants to go on holiday or simply decides it doesn't really want a dog or a cat. There ain't no such thing as a free kitten, any more than a free child.

Absolutely beautiful photo of Stoffy, Ann. Got here a bit late, but good to see your first blog for 2013. Lets hope one day every kitten and puppy born into this world will find a loving home.
